They began performing at the center, changing their name to Handicap and eventually Andicap.Over time, they began to play more gigs in and around Birmingham and the Regal Cinema in Handsworth. When Robert and David drifted away in 1964, Jeff took over as lead singer and found replacements.Jeff left Andicap at the end of 1964 and joined a local band called The Chads. He bought his first studio recording gear, a stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder, in 1965.The musician quit The Chads in 1966 to become the lead guitarist of The Nightriders (later renamed The Idle Race). He soon became the chief songwriter for the music group. The Idle Race published their first album, ‘The Birthday Party,’ in October 1968. He wrote the majority of the songs. Despite positive reviews from critics, it did not chart in the United Kingdom or the United States.Jeff produced the group’s second album, ‘Idle Race,’ released in November 1969. Meanwhile, they began recording their second album, ‘Electric Light Orchestra II,’ in May 1972.‘ELO 2’ was released in January 1973 and charted in the UK’s Top 40 albums. They released their third album, ‘On the Third Day,’ in December. Even though both hit albums received critical praise, Lynne’s father was unimpressed, telling him that his music lacked melody. His father’s criticism prompted Lynne to start a new project in the music industry, a concept album titled ‘Eldorado,’ about a guy who escapes his dull existence by traveling to a fantasy land. It was released in September 1974 in the United States and was soon certified gold in the United States and silver in the United Kingdom.‘Eldorado’ was followed by the equally popular ‘Face the Music,’ which featured the band’s first worldwide hit, ‘Evil Woman.’ It was in the Top 10 charts in both the UK and the US by early 1976.‘The New World Record,’ ELO’s sixth studio album, was a huge success. It was released in November 1976 and sold 5 million copies worldwide in a year, earning multi-platinum status in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The band’s album ‘Out Of The Blue’ was published in 1977, and it was with it that they achieved the pinnacle of their chart glory.ELO performed a bunch of times in Europe in 1986, the last of which was on July 13, 1986, in Stuttgart, Germany. Following that, ELO disbanded.Jeff Lynne was asked to co-produce George Harrison’s comeback album, ‘Cloud Nine,’ in late 1986. While they were working on it, Harrison suggested that the two of them form an electric rock band. In April 1988, Harrison, Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty founded the ‘Traveling Wilburys.’The debut album ‘Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1’ was released on October 18, 1988. It was a huge hit and was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year in 1989.In 1990, Lynne released his first solo album ‘Armchair Theatre.’By 2000, he had revived Electric Light Orchestra, purchasing 50% of the company’s name from Bev Bevan and releasing the album ‘Zoom’ under the title in 2001.He sang several songs during the ‘Concert for George’ in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall in London as a homage to George Harrison. The singer also collaborated with Tom Petty to co-produce his third and final solo studio album, ‘Highway Companion,’ in 2006. Lynne released ELO’s thirteenth album, ‘Alone in the Universe,’ on November 13, 2015, which featured his new songs. It was certified platinum in the United Kingdom.
